No gay divorce in Texas
Sep. 1st, 2010 10:02 amThe 5th Texas Court of Appeals ruled that a Dallas district court judge didn't have the authority to hear a divorce case involving two Dallas men who married in Massachusetts in 2006. Republican state Attorney General Greg Abbott's office had appealed after Judge Tena Callahan, a Democrat, said she did have jurisdiction and dismissed the state's attempt to intervene.
"Today's court of appeals decision overruled the district court's improper ruling, confirmed the constitutionality of Texas' traditional definition of marriage and correctly found that Texas courts lack the legal authority to grant divorces to same-sex couples," said Abbott spokesman Jerry Strickland.

Spokesman Inspector Tim Shields said the concern centres around the fact that both women had been arrested for public intoxication and were in a cell commonly referred to as the “drunk tank” at the time.
What is at issue here is the level of consent that could have been given by one or both of the women in consideration of the fact that they had both been brought into cells for being drunk in public,” Insp. Shields said in an interview.

“The laws don’t regulate how to deal with this case, so even if the group raped her ten times, we would not be able to sentence them,” Nguyen Van Thin, chief judge of the provincial People’s Court

I saw Elvis

I had gone to the dance because my guitar tech/friend Brett was going to be playing his guitar in Route 66, which if it sounds suspiciously like a 60's band is appropriately named. Brett's wife Rosanna clinched the deal when she batted her cute little eyes at me and asked if we could give her a ride to venue after she closed up the music store (they own it) for the night.
Brett is one of those people who are nice - the kind of guy that you instantly like and will keep liking over time. Usually he's wearing a t-shirt, jeans and sandals in the shop so it was quite a surprise to see him in white shirt, black pants and red suspenders. He looked sharp - and then the band started and holy moly, he has one great voice.
Fun. I had a good time, took lots of pictures and danced for the first time post Montreal.
The only problem was agonizing over what shoes to wear...
Wasps and peeing.
Aug. 25th, 2010 09:44 amThere must be a mistake, no?
No.
I'm highly allergic to insect bites, particularly to wasps where one bite is serious, two or more can be fatal. It’s all about anaphylactic shock - systemic vasodilation which results in low blood pressure, severe bronchoconstriction to the point where I am unable to breathe.
The normal treatment is a jab with my auto-injector and get to the hospital to be hooked up to an IV for the administration of epinephrine, antihistamines and steroids. On this latest occasion I could not find my auto-injector (which was in a pocket of my pack) and holy moly – I was freaking.
Despite my efforts to the contrary I survived my latest wasp bite episode - I was however given a rather pointed and stern talking to by an ER nurse for driving to the hospital and for not having my Epipen at hand - purrrrrrrrrr.
After 6 to 24 hours in observation I can be released with a prescription for two weeks on Prednisolone, a steroidal anti-inflammatory. Anyhow - the real downside here is that I pee every two hours at night when on Prednisolone.
The pizza I picked up on the way home was awful yummy though!

The Dandylion can be dismissed as being an invasive weed but if you take a closer look it is in fact quite beautiful…
Sort of like people at times.
Sort of like me.
Connections
Jun. 5th, 2010 08:52 pmI’ve been taking the van and truck to Marty’s Garage for repairs and maintenance. It’s a small garage across the road from me – one of the last of the old fashioned independent garages where you just know that you’re going to get honest quotes and good work at a reasonable price.
The mechanic I deal with is Alan – not Marty. I like Alan – he’s a really nice person and has given me good service, advice and always with a smile. There’s also another mechanic there and a woman – all are nice people.
There was a garage sale at the garage today so I walked over and picked up this little shelf, a CNR oil tin and box of what I thought was old bottles. Grand total - $5.50
There as also an old tobacco tin, two little tins containing tire patches and a third containing a road flare,. There was also a fishing knife, a wooden barrel tap and a grenade.
Yes – a grenade.
Cool.
I think it’s a WWII German grenade - a Model 24 Stielhandgranate that was the standard hand grenade of the German Army from the end of World War I until the end of World War II. The very distinctive appearance led to its being called a "stick grenade", or a "potato masher" in British Army slang, and is today one of the most easily recognized infantry weapons of the 20th century
Anyhow – let’s get back to the connections.
The woman from the garage was taking stuff from a cute little house that is right across the street from me and on the same property as the garage. We start talking about the stuff I’ve picked out and she’s telling me about how Marty was a collector of cool stuff.
All of a sudden I realize that I have seen her working in the once beautiful gardens at the front of the house. As it turns out, Marty died last year and was her husband. She she owns the garage. She’s clearing out the house, going to sell the garage and try to carry on with life.
How ironic that as I meet a few wonderful people they are moving on – I’ll miss them…
The first C-130 J model Hercules in Canada
Jun. 5th, 2010 07:54 pmBeing the military a rather lengthy and boring official type gathering had to be held to mark the arrival of the first C-130 J model Hercules.
Yawn.
Afterward though it was time for us to gather with family and friends to see the old and the new – and the big.
The big is the CC-177 III Globemaster. This is one huge airplane.
Huge.
The old is this H model Hercules that had all of 5 hours of allowable flight time remaining. That’s just enough time to get it to CFB Greenwood where it will become a static display. This plane started as an E model and was upgraded several times.
The new is this shiny new J model Hercules.
The J model incorporates state-of-the-art technology to reduce manpower requirements, lower operating and support costs, and provide life cycle cost savings over earlier C-130 models. Compared to older C-130s, the J model climbs faster and higher, flies farther at a higher cruise speed, and takes off and lands in a shorter distance. The C-130J-30 is a stretch version, adding 15 feet to fuselage, increasing usable space in the cargo compartment.
Major system improvements include:
- advanced two-pilot flight station with fully integrated digital avionics
- color multifunctional liquid crystal displays and head-up displays
- state-of-the-art navigation systems with dual inertial navigation system and global positioning system
- fully integrated defensive systems
- low-power color radar
- digital moving map display
- new turboprop engines with six bladed, all composite propellers
- digital auto pilot
- improved fuel, environmental and ice protection systems
- an enhanced cargo handling system.

Happy feet!
May. 29th, 2010 08:30 amI was out doing a bit of shopping when I stopped at a nail spa that I had not seen before. Friday afternoon at 4:30 and they fit me in right away.
$25 for a pedicure is very reasonable but I opted for the $35 summer special. This included the pedicure, polish, exfoliation with Honeysuckle scrub, massage, paraffin dip for my feet and some pretty nail art.
45 minutes of bliss – I gave the nice girl a really good tip and will book an appointment with her the next time as she was awesome and fun to talk to.
Happy feet!
