For those of you who appreciate Canada's Worst Driver, all things Air Force or ever had the pleasure of spending a few weeks in an H-uit,well, have I got a deal for you.

More of the story, a link to 71 pictures from Camp Picton and a tale about how I wound up on the airfield runways are all awaiting you here.

I presume that's Picton as in General Picton of that ilk?

No clue about that. We just assume that the old BCATP base was named for the nearby town of Picton.

Which was probably named for the 'top hat general' (General Sir Thomas Picton one of the field commanders at Waterloo :o)

Likely this is so. Anything here in Canada that wasn't already named by the First Nations was named after Important (and usually dead or soon-to-be-so) English or French men (oh, and the odd woman. Regina comes to mind.)

Nice that a place gets names after a true English eccentric of the old school (not that that prevented him from being an excellent general :o)

I'm not sure how Picton came about to have it's name - I just enjoyed a bit of time walking around the old buildings and thinking back into my past where I had the distinctly drafty displeasure of trying to sleep on a hard bunk with lousy bedding.

Old buildings, old barns, old equipment and old disused roads all give me pause to think of what was and who was there at one time.

I suspect that being bought up surrounded by barracks and fortifications dating between 1068 and 1960 was largely reponsible for turning me into a military historian :o)
