According to Wikipedia, Taraxacum officinale, the Common Dandelion (often simply called "dandelion"), is a herbaceous perennial plant of the family Asteraceae (Compositae).

T. officinale
is considered a weedy species, especially in lawns and along roadsides, but it is sometimes used as a medical herb and in food preparation. As a nearly cosmopolitan weed, Dandelion is best known for its yellow flower heads, that turn into round balls of silver tufted fruits, that blow away on the wind.

Bosh, they are neither dandy or lions...

The name comes from the French for "Lion's tooth"
(dent de lion)
in reference to the shape of the leaves...
IMO, dandelions add colour, splendour, and magic
to an otherwise ordinary lawn...

your challenge for today is to go forth and take a picture of a found object that is yellow - then post it here.

Not today.
Rain and thunderstorms.
I did take some pix yesterday.
Lemme see if there's anything yellow.
If not, I'll squirt some mustard on a paper towel.
:)

I love the stories of Japanese tourists asking people "What are all the pretty yellow flowers you have in your yard?"

They name may have caught on in English
because of inference Dandy Lion suggests--
A colourful pretense of courage quickly disapated.

Collect enough of them and you can make a fine wine.

I prefer white clover, which will soon be adorning some of the more gravelly patches at the top of our drive.

Of course the French name for dandelion is pisenlit (any yes, it DOES mean piss in the bed- the French have the same legend as the English about dandelions :o)

As herself says, dandelion flowers do make good wine and the leaves are good in salad.

Pisenlit
