Remembering

It's almost certain that I will spend the 11th of the 11th on the road this year and will be no where near a cenotaph. This Maple leaf that I picked up in Niagra Canyon at Goldstream Park will follow me and will be part of my minute of silent respect that is spent in the trees or overlooking the ocean.

I spent many years observing our Canadian Remembrance Day while wearing a uniform - some at the BC Legislature, some in Ottawa, some while onboard a ship and at least one while pounding the ground.

I still go every year to remember those who sacrificed, those who gave and those who went before me and serve now.

as we who are left grow old.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
we will remember them."

I'll be at the cenotaph, with a smaller number of old folk every year.

Yahh, I'll be in the parade this year; out of kindness, we always let the Air Force go first. Don't know why they come up here when they have a perfectly fine base on the other side of the drawbridge, but maybe they like higher altitudes?

Anyway, this is always the season of sober thought, especially when I ponder those who we couldn't bring home again. And we compare ribbons with each other, and get quiet for a while.

When the piper plays Amazing Grace that always chokes me...

who was there, too, and wishes history had taken different turnings.
